Consultations

When do you need a behavioral consultation?

A behavior consultation with an applied animal behaviorist is appropriate when there is a specific behavioral issue. With a new puppy or adult dog, basic obedience training is an important part of socialization and prevention of behavior problems. But if there is already a behavioral problem such as anxiety, fear or aggression, training will be unable to solve it. You need a specialist with the education and experience to help you and your pet. Animal behavior is a specialty field in veterinary medicine and graduate school because it is so complex and dynamic, and it is so important to stay abreast of all the new scientific developments to be able to continue to treat pets in a safe, scientific and effective manner. If you think of human medicine, your veterinarian is much like a family doctor (great for improving your physical health) a trainer is very like a teacher (great for learning new things) and an applied animal behaviorist is like a psychologist or psychiatrist (great for solving problems). I can help you determine whether you need a trainer, a veterinarian or an applied animal behaviorist. All play important role in your pets development, but not all are appropriate to see in every situation.

Who are applied animal behaviorists?

In a field where anyone can call themselves a trainer or behaviorist, it can be difficult to decide how to proceed or who really is qualified to help you with your pet. You may have tried a number of professionals and been disappointed by their approach or the results. The danger is thinking that we really are all the same and there is no help for your pet. Not true!
